Work on the new library at LRI started on 22nd September 2014. It is expected that it will open on 23rd February 2015.
Where will the new library be? It will in what was Odames Ward which has been closed for a little while. This is on the 2nd floor of the wing of Victoria Building which runs parallel with Infirmary Road and is opposite the multi-story car park and the Hospital Hopper stops. A small map can be seen on the left-hand side, or click on the map to get a larger version.
Why is a new library necessary? Since the University of Leicester closed the Clinical Sciences Library in August 2011 the LRI has been without a suitable library facility. The current library, which opened in Jarvis Building in February 2012, has been able to offer a service that has been appreciated by many staff and students but the facilities have been very limited. We expect that the new library will have the best facilities of any of our libraries and the plans for it have been informed by the large user survey that we did in 2013.
What facilities will there be? While it will take time to build up our book collection, we will open with plenty of PCs, a range of individual/group study spaces and work areas, a bookable training room, free WiFi, a quiet study room, printing, photocopying, vending machines and self issue services, and the most important resource for any library: friendly, professional staff. We are aiming to make this new library a place where it is easy and enjoyable to spend time.
